About the artist…
Heather Stewart is an Australian artist working mostly in watercolour and ink. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland her work is created intuitively. It’s not about trying to replicate, her sense making comes through in what can be called interpretive art - drawing on real elements to coalesce ideas, feelings and incorporating places, experiences and the stories.
My Approach
My approach is shaped by a lifelong creative thread. Having excelled in art at school, creativity has always travelled alongside me, throughout an eclectic career that includes roles as a ski instructor, flight attendant, and academic. It is in this chapter of my life that I’ve been able to fully immerse myself in exploring, refining, and developing a style.
Working primarily in watercolour and ink. I paint and sketch daily from my home studio, en plein air, and while travelling. As watercolour implies I use water to interact and allow the colours and atmosphere of each environment to guide my work. For me it is about creating a collaboration between what I see, feel and experience.
You will see my inspirations come through. For example, I volunteer with sea turtles so there are some pieces that reflect the mama turtles , the hatchlings, the turtle tracks and spending a lot of time on the beach with these magnificent creatures early in the morning and at night. I am inspired by coastal environments, native flora, and the distinctive light of Australia and the South Pacific. My palette reflects earthy golds, turquoise waters, indigo skies, and rich reds. Each painting explores connection — to land, memory, and the gentle rhythms of nature — grounded in observation, respect for place, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
To see what I have been working on lately, the ‘Step into the studio …’ page shows available works, and some past pieces (sold). Creating is fun for me which is important (teeny tiny moments can be frustrating 🙄). It’s a huge bonus if others get joy from my work.
Enjoy 💕
