Bottlebrush has become a continuing fascination for me, growing abundantly in the landscape where I live. Watching it through the seasons reveals constant change — tight buds, soft new growth, and those earthy bursts of colour. Daily walks allow me to see this native plant which has become a quiet study in form, rhythm, and the way colour lives in nature.
This piece developed through experimentation, using loose watercolour to explore different ways of expressing the texture and movement of the softer beginnings to the gnarly forms of bottlebrush. Layers were allowed to build and soften, echoing the natural spread of foliage, branches and the ‘flowers’. The painting reflects both observation and play — a response to the energy, resilience, and distinctive beauty of a plant that feels deeply part of its place.
