This painting was inspired by a bougainvillea I saw in Atuona in (French Polynesia). Its colour and form staying with me long after I had moved on. The rich quinacridone reds, winding stems, and distinctive leaves replayed in my mind - the memory of the vivid against the light and foliage - I can smell the island just thinking about them. Yes, some plants have a way of imprinting themselves — not just as a sighting, but as a feeling of place carried forward.
Worked in a loose watercolour style, the piece allowed pigment to move freely, echoing the relaxed yet vibrant and fragile energy of tropical growth. Colour led the process, with flowing marks suggesting rather than defining form.
