This painting started when I was on the beautiful island of Nuku Hiva (Marquesas, French Polynesia- FP). The bursts of pink energy couldn’t be ignored. So the pop of pinks along with the richness of being in the Marquesas really led to this original painting when I returned home and played with the ideas of colour, impact and meaning. I believe the species is a calliandra.
Whilst the painting is a celebration of being able to visit these amazing islands, the layering of colour with a wet on wet technique enabled the contrasts which I feel speaks to the joy and quiet power of the flowers. The pink along with the turquoise depicts the contrasts and freshness of the flora and the water of the islands.
